The Challenge

Ocean Technologies Group (OTG), part of the Lloyd’s Register family, operates a mission-critical suite of maritime learning and compliance products used across thousands of vessels and global training centres. Over years of organic growth and fragmented system ownership, several core platforms including Compas, OTG’s training and compliance engine, had accumulated significant technical debt. Hardcoded banking and tax configurations, unoptimised database queries and years of inconsistent engineering practices resulted in platform instability, performance bottlenecks and service outages. Customer trust was at risk, payroll operations were impacted, and engineering teams lacked the documentation and tooling needed for long-term maintainability. At the same time, OTG needed better reporting across sales, marketing and finance; improved data integrity; modernised course management workflows; and a more scalable platform architecture to support global availability. G&F were engaged to stabilise core systems, uplift engineering practices and accelerate OTG’s broader digital transformation agenda.

Stabilising Compas & restoring customer confidence

G&F took over from a previous offshore consultancy to stabilise Compas, a platform that had become increasingly fragile under the weight of accumulated technical debt. System timeouts, slow database queries, hardcoded financial logic and limited documentation created operational risk and a poor customer experience.Our consultants rapidly restored stability by optimising database performance, removing hardcoded configurations, improving maintainability and resolving long-standing issues affecting payroll and core training workflows. As resilience returned, we worked alongside OTG’s engineering and architecture teams to embed best practices, implement unit testing and improve long-term documentation.

Modernising reporting & financial insight

G&F improved data transparency and decision-making across sales, marketing and finance by automating critical Power BI reporting and standardising key data models. We enhanced sales commission and pipeline reporting, providing real-time visibility into team performance, and supported OTG’s transition to Netsuite, ensuring continuity of financial reporting during the migration.

Our consultants also improved marketing analytics clarity and reorganised the Product Catalogue, enabling seamless Salesforce integration and downstream alignment. This reduced manual reporting overhead, improved accuracy and delivered a single, consistent view of commercial performance.

Strengthening platform architecture, security & backend performance

As part of OTG’s Transformation and OSM programmes, G&F supported a major uplift of the underlying platform architecture to improve security, performance and long-term scalability. Many core services were operating on outdated infrastructure with limited optimisation, inconsistent coding practices and an incomplete authentication and deployment model. G&F modernised authentication by integrating Keycloak SSO and MFA, improving user security across the organisation’s training ecosystem. We refactored key APIs to enhance performance and reliability, and introduced a structured CI/CD pipeline, enabling faster, safer and more predictable deployments across development teams.

To support global content distribution, G&F deployed a resilient storage and delivery framework using AWS S3 and CloudFront, ensuring international learners receive consistent, low-latency access to course materials. Alongside this, we strengthened backend data flows, optimised SQL queries and indexing, and improved the integrity of key datasets to reduce outages and downstream inconsistencies.

These improvements delivered a more secure, resilient and scalable platform, capable of supporting OTG’s enterprise growth, future products and increasing global user demand.
